Legal & Commercial Advisory Work
Corium advises a range of entities on the structuring, drafting, negotiation and delivery of commercial rights agreements in the sports sector around the world. Having represented rights holders and top tier commercial partners across a variety of sports globally, we are ideally positioned to add value to our clients and help them achieve their strategic goals in this area.
Major Events
Corium advises international organisations on best practice in relation to the legal framework for the bidding, staging and commercial exploitation of major events, providing guidance on structuring the contractual matrix underpinning a top-tier sports or entertainment property.
We support clients through the whole life cycle of a major event – from the bidding phase (tender documentation and strategy), the preparation phase (drafting and negotiating agreements for event hosting, athlete participation and venue usage), through to the operational phase (ticket terms, venue regulations, advising on anti-infringement and rights protection strategies).
We bring to bear experience from working on FIFA World Cups, Olympic Games, Cricket World Cups and other global multi-sport events, as well as top tier domestic sporting and entertainment properties.
Legal Risk for Sporting Bodies
Having advised many entities in the sports sector, both as a private practice lawyer and as an in-house advisor at governing bodies, I have put together a structured series of modules through which Corium aims to optimise the approach to legal risk that is taken by our clients.
Tailored to the strategic goals and resources of each organisation, this approach ultimately seeks to reduce reliance on external legal advice and upskill personnel in other functional areas, so that they gain the knowledge and confidence to do their jobs more effectively on matters that interface with legal risk.
We find that the organisational benefit is appreciable in terms of enhanced operational delivery, clearer internal accountability, and better protection against the range of factors that can present legal risk to entities operating in this sector.
Cricket
Having been a first-class cricketer, coach, umpire, commentator, player agent and committee member, in both professional and voluntary roles, I now advise a number of bodies on regulatory and policy issues affecting the sport globally.
I sit on the Laws Sub-Committee of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), providing input on the Laws of Cricket that apply around the world at every level of the game.
I sit as a cricket policy advisor on the ICC’s Almanac Group, providing advice for the ICC’s Match Officials on the application and interpretation of the Playing Conditions for international cricket.
I am also a member of MCC’s Research, Development & Innovation Working Group, which considers the impact of technology on the evolution of the world game, specifically in the light of MCC’s role as the Guardian of the Laws of Cricket.
